Going back to basics with skin care ...

With so many products on the market and even more ingredients, choosing skin care can become confusing. Today, we are taking a step back and going back to basics.

Our skin is made of three layers, the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis and is there to protect us from infection and the environment and to shape the body. We see the surface layer of the epidermis, called the stratum corneum, which is made up of microbiome, the acid mantle, lipids and dead skin cells. It is our barrier to keep the natural moisture in the skin and the environment out. Daily skin care nourishes this skin barrier to keep our defences maintained.

We can look after our skin by eating well and drinking plenty of water; reducing our alcohol intake; removing make-up before bed and having a daily skin care routine. Start with a simple regime and add in other products as you need to address specific concerns. Twice daily, cleanse to remove oils, makeup and pollutants from the skin. Follow that with a good moisturiser to balance the oils and hydrate the skin, choosing one that suits your skin type. Each morning, finish with a sunscreen regardless of the time of year. Our skin regenerates every 28 to 55 days so try a regime for three months or more to see if it is working for you.

Skin care tailored to our skin type is more likely to deliver the results we're looking for. At Ahuriri Beauty Therapy, we're big advocates of Nimue skin care, a range focused on the four skin classifications:

  1. Environmentally damaged - this skin type shows signs of dryness, dehydration, lines, wrinkles and uneven skin colouring and texture.
  2. Hyperpigmented - the complexion is uneven with age spots or more severe hyperpigmentation.
  3. Problematic - signs of excessive oiliness, breakouts, enlarged pores and congestion.
  4. Interactive - skin that is temporarily hypersensitive, thinning, red or irritated.

If you have concerns about your skin or simply not happy with what you are currently using, ask us about a complimentary skin assessment to determine your skin type and products that will help it best. The assessment takes around 15 minutes in store.

See you soon,
